WESTMORELAND ANTIQUE CENTER

APRIL 12, 2008

by Kelly

In our quest to hit every major antique and thrift store upstate NY has to offer we seldom find a place to "write home about." Most places are scary or dirty or just plain over-priced. When we hit this little gem just outside of Rome, NY, however, we hit the proverbial jackpot.

Westmoreland Antique Center (click on the name to see their site - more pictures! Zowee!) doesn't look like much from the outside, as you can see above. But on the inside is two-floors-worth of something for everyone!

For instance - clothes! Oh, the clothes were stupendous! I mean, who wouldn't want to wear this zany cat shirt?!

Every day of the damn year!

The skirts and dresses of the 60s and 70s were my personal favorites. Oh, the fabric!

My eyes! Actually, I do kinda like the colors on that last one. Am I sane? You may think twice - the following is my favorite shirt of the bunch. It's a men's shirt, and this was the breast pocket:

A deer floating in an inner-tube! Deer gotta vacation, too, my darlings!

Here's an artistic shot (albeit kinda blurry - shooting without flash is a b.tch kids!) I took in the clothing area. I did not set this up.

I love the fake Smurf juxtaposed with the shimmery pink dress. No, I don't know why. As Whitney said, "I don't know why I like it...I just do" (Oh, I'm so emotional, babies)!

Another artistic shot (to me, anyway). These shoes are far-out in a groovy kinda way...

Oh my god, don't you just love those orange furry ones?! They go so well with the orange knit cap right next to them! Yay! Can you even imagine what kind of orange furry negligee went with those shoes?!

This was in the makeshift dressing room:

Moving out of the clothing area, anyone remember these tacky knick-knacks from the 70s/early 80s?

I remember our local Hallmark store carrying what seems like thousands of different variations. Oops, shiz, I mentioned this sort of thing already in my Thrifty Shopper post! I'm nothing if not redundant. I'm nothing if not redundant. In the pic above you have to love the tiki items, too! Get yer 70s on!

Our first artwork of the day:

Here it is, kids, the part you've been waiting for - the numbered photo of things on a shelf!

1. Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck straws
2. Toy soldier
3. Happy Days "Fonzie" Soda (or something)
4. Bob-A-Loop game (1950s)
5. odd lacquered animals
6. 3-D glasses
7. Welcome Back, Kotter trading cards

Also found on a shelf:

McDonalds cups and Archie glasses! Truth-be-told, I am fascinated with McDonalds memorabilia. I have no idea why. Just something I love. You'll see.

See? A Ronald McDonald cookie jar!

Worst artwork of the day (for which they asked $40). I do know who it's by and I won't write the name here (not that you'd know it). No, it wasn't better in person. It looked just like this:

I thought these Flatsy paper dolls were pretty awesome:

They are apparently the paper version of a very popular regular doll from the late 60s/early 70s that was, uh, flat. Here is the official site for Flatsy Dolls. I had no idea about these, for some reason - perhaps because I wasn't born until 1973. Looking at the site, the regular dolls sure look familiar, though. Once you see a flat doll, I guess it's kinda hard to forget it after all. Hey, I'm a poet!

Hey, hey hey! It's a FAT ALBERT thermos!

Whoever owned a Fat Albert lunch pail as a kid must have had nerves of steel. In my school that would have been an invitation for fat jokes (whether you were fat or not). Original owner of the Fat Albert thermos, Project Absurd salutes you!

More McDonalds:

Grimace Rules. Project Absurd had spoken.

A flea market post isn't complete without a cookbook!

Oh my god, what is that on the cover?! Let's take a closer look, shall we?

I know we looked it up in the cookbook but I seriously can't remember what it is now. It looks barfalicious.

I saw this next item and nearly fainted from shock and delight. One big high you can get going to flea markets is discovering something you had totally forgotten about from your childhood. You're walking along, then suddenly, BAM! Recognition! And that's what happened when I saw this:

I had roughly 7,463 Avon items growing up - people just kept buying me them. But Randy Pandy (above) was always one of my favorites! He's so cute! I believe he originally came holding some Avon bar soap in his belly and he floated on his back in the tub! Pretty freakin cool, huh? Randy, I sincerely apologize. I am so sorry I forgot about you for 20+ years! Why didn't I buy this? We need to get back there!

I didn't personally own one of these, but just looking at it brings the nostalgez!

Just what is going on on top of that camper, kids?! Sorry for the gratuitousy-ness!

I've once again saved the best for last! SAUERKRAUT HAT! SAUERKRAUT HAT!

Westmoreland Antique Center is one of the best flea markets in the upstate NY area - GO THERE.
